WRF-chem
The Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) provides the capability to simulate chemistry and aerosols from cloud scales to regional scales. WRF-Chem has been developed by NOAA with contributions from NCAR, PNNL, EPA, and university scientists. Details of the model are provided by the WRF-Chem working group.
- As part of the MIRAGE initiative, WRF-Chem is being used to study the transport and chemistry of pollutants from the Mexico City megacity.
- Thunderstorms impact the composition of the atmosphere by raining out pollutants and by injecting chemical constituents to the upper troposphere where they play a role in ozone chemistry and climate. WRF coupled with aqueous chemistry is being used to understand the effect of different processes in thunderstorms on ozone precursors, that is, nitrogen oxides and hydrogen oxide radicals and their precursors (e.g., hydrogen peroxide and formaldehyde).
